Digital Ulcers

Digital ulcers (DU) are painful sores that develop on the fingertips, toes and other areas of the hands and feet. They are caused by the reduced blood flow in the small vessels of the affected area, resulting from a combination of factors such as smoking, diabetes, inflammatory conditions and vascular disorders. DU affects people of all ages, but most commonly those with scleroderma. Treatment for digital ulcers can range from topical medications, physical therapy and laser treatments to oral medications and surgery. Treatment aims to minimize pain and improve healing time, while maintaining the health of the skin and preventing the recurrence of DU. Digital ulcers can have a significant impact on quality of life and therefore treatment should be tailored to the individual's needs.
